Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. – Olivia Porter (Jr./Bakersfield, CA) of Saint Augustine's University recorded 16 kills and 13 digs, but the Lady Falcons lost to Livingstone College 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 20-25) in a CIAA Southern Division women's volleyball match at New Trent Gymnasium on Monday, Oct. 12, 2015.
The match featured two of the CIAA's top hitters in Porter of the Lady Falcons and Lareecia Swiney of the Lady Blue Bears. Swiney leads the conference in kills per set and Porter ranks second in total kills.
Both standouts showed why they are among the best in the conference. They each posted a double-double and led their teams in kills and digs. Swiney amassed a match-high 23 kills and added 16 digs.
Led by both student-athletes, the Lady Falcons and the Lady Blue Bears battled furiously throughout the match. The Lady Falcons nearly forced a fifth set, but their 20-18 lead evaporated in the fourth set. The Lady Blue Bears scored the final seven points to clinch the match.
Juliseea Thomas (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) added 19 assists and 10 digs for the Lady Falcons. Shakera Hall (Fr./Bridgetown, Barbados) and Zoey Isom (Fr./Phoenix, AZ) contributed 11 digs and 10 digs, respectively.
Jekisha Rhynes added 11 kills and Mattisen Williams chipped in 10 kills for the Lady Blue Bears. Stevee Cotton registered 36 assists and 16 digs while Rukiya Garland finished with 11 digs.
The Lady Falcons won the first set in decisive fashion. Porter led the way with five kills and four digs in the eight-point win. In the second set, the Lady Falcons were rolling 15-10 before the Lady Blue Bears rallied. Leading 22-19, the Lady Falcons were outscored 6-1 as the Lady Blue Bears evened the match. In the third set, the score was tied 14-14, but the Lady Blue Bears outscored the Lady Falcons 11-7 for the four-point win.
The Lady Falcons had fewer attack errors (21-27), but the Lady Blue Bears totaled more kills (49-36). The attack percentage was .115 for the Lady Falcons and .155 for the Lady Blue Bears.
The loss dropped the Lady Falcons to 1-3 in the Southern Division, 3-4 in the CIAA and 7-8 overall. The Lady Blue Bears are 2-2 in the division, 2-5 in the CIAA and 5-8 overall.
The Lady Falcons are back at home on Wednesday, Oct. 14, against Shaw University in Emery Gymnasium. The match between the crosstown rivals will start at 6 p.m.
