Williams Throws Three Touchdown Passes In Loss To Winston-Salem State

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jovahn Williams (Cleveland Heights, OH) tossed three touchdown passes, including two to Jordan Turkvant (R-Sr./Orangeburg, SC), and Roderick Davenport II (R-Sr./Orangeburg, SC) rushed for a season-high 138 yards for Saint Augustine's University in a 36-19 CIAA football loss to Winston-Salem State University at the George Williams Athletic Complex on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015.

The three touchdown passes were a career-high for Williams, making his first start of the season. With Williams behind center, the Falcons set season highs for points and total offensive yards (260) against the Rams.

Williams and Turkvant connected on their first touchdown score in the first quarter. Turkvant caught a pass from Williams in the corner of the end zone to put the Falcons ahead 6-0. The lead was the first for the Falcons this season. The Falcons scored on their first drive after linebacker Terry Warren (So./Franklin, VA) intercepted a pass in Falcons' territory and returned it to midfield.

The Rams (2-0 Southern Division, 3-1 CIAA, 3-4 overall) then scored 22 consecutive points to take a 22-6 lead at halftime. The highlight for the Rams during that stretch was a 90-yard punt return by Reggie Wilkins in the second quarter.

Williams and Turkvant hooked up again in the third quarter for their second score. Turkvant hauled in a 13-yard pass from Williams, and Sean Smith (R-Fr./Valdosta, GA) booted the extra point to cut the Rams' lead to 22-13. The score happened one play after Denzel Watkins (Sr./Troutman, NC) picked off a pass near midfield and ran to the Rams' 13.

The Rams scored two touchdowns to push the lead to 36-13 in the third quarter. Williams closed out the scoring late in the fourth quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Michael Allen (So./Lilburn, GA) for the Falcons.

The Falcons' quarterback ended the day completing 10 of 20 passes for 91 yards. Williams also threw one interception.

Davenport gained the bulk of the Falcons' offensive yards behind an offensive line which gave him running room. Last year's CIAA rushing leader, he gained over 100 yards for the first time this season. The Falcons' tailback is now 249 yards away from becoming the University's career rushing leader in the modern era. He has three games left to break the mark.

Davenport by far had his most productive day this season. He averaged 5.8 yards on 24 carries including a 22-yard run in the fourth quarter in addition to catching three passes for 20 yards. Turkvant led all Falcons' receivers with three receptions for 39 yards and two touchdowns.

On defense, defensive back Justin Jones (Sr./Fort Valley, GA) of the Falcons led both teams with 12 tackles. Linebacker Tray King (So./Kershaw, SC) added seven tackles including a sack, a forced fumble, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry.

The Falcons (0-2 Southern Division, 0-4 CIAA, 0-7 overall) were able to sack Rams' quarterback Rod Tinsley three times and force him to complete 7 of 17 pass attempts with one interception. The Rams still churned out 444 total offensive yards due to their ground game. Tyree Massey rambled for a career-high 164 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for the Rams, who gained 264 rushing yards.

Tinsley threw for 180 passing yards. Rashan Williams snatched three of Tinsley's passes for 76 yards including a 28-yarder for a score.

Before the contest started, Athletic Director George Williams along with Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Kristene Kelly of Saint Augustine's University brought the Falcons' and Rams' players and coaches together at midfield to pray for Rams' player Marquise Gaddy, who is recovering from a major injury in practice this season. The group said the Lord's Prayer in unison.

The contest was designated as the Pink Out Game to raise breast cancer awareness. Saint Augustine's University will donate 10% of ticket sales from the contest to the Pretty In Pink Foundation, a non-profit organization based out of Raleigh, N.C. which provides financial assistance and support to underinsured and uninsured North Carolinians with breast cancer.

After two straight home games, the Falcons head to Fayetteville, N.C., for a road contest against Fayetteville State University at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium next Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
