Box Score
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Jovahn Williams (Fr./Cleveland Heights, OH) and Jordan Turkvant (R-Sr./Orangeburg, SC) hooked up for two touchdowns, and Roderick Davenport II (R-Sr./Orangeburg, SC) rushed 25 times for 144 yards and a touchdown for Saint Augustine's University in a 40-18 CIAA football loss to Fayetteville State University at Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015.

The trio helped the Falcons build an 18-13 lead after the third quarter. The Broncos scored 27 straight points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

T
he Falcons gave a gutsy effort on the Broncos' Homecoming Day. They scored first for the second consecutive game and led at halftime for the first time this season.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons took a 6-0 lead when Williams found Turkvant for a 43-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. The key play in the drive was a 31-yard fourth-down pass by punter Sean Smith (R-Fr./Valdosta, GA) to Turkvant on a fake punt.

The Broncos tied the score 6-6 when Tavon Gatlin caught a 22-yard pass from Derek Bryant, but the Falcons regained the lead on a 48-yard run up the middle by Davenport. His score gave the Falcons a 12-6 lead at halftime.

Both teams traded leads in the third quarter. Bryant connected with Gatlin again for a 7-yard scoring pass which put the Broncos ahead 13-12. The Falcons responded with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Turkvant to climb back in front 18-13. Tackle Darius Goodman (R-So./Richmond, VA) set up the scoring drive by recovering a fumble in Broncos' territory.

The Broncos (2-1 Southern Division, 4-1 CIAA, 4-4 overall) broke the game open in the fourth quarter by scoring 21 points in a span of 2:22. Two Bryant touchdown passes – one to Chris Hubert for 34 yards and the other to Gatlin for 57 yards – made the score 27-18 in favor of the Broncos. Darius Jeffers returned an interception 50 yards to extend their lead to 34-18.

The Broncos tacked on one more touchdown late in the game. Darreall Hamlett scored on a one-yard run for the final score.

Despite the loss, the Falcons (0-3 Southern Division, 0-5 CIAA, 0-8 overall) are improving as they enter the final stretch of the season. They gained a season-high 324 offensive yards and outrushed the Broncos 158-93.

Individually, Turkvant had four receptions for a season-high 114 yards. He has four touchdown catches in his last two games.

For the second straight week, Davenport rushed for over 100 yards. He now is 109 yards away from becoming the University career rushing leader. After starting the season slowly due to injuries, Davenport has gained 282 yards in two weeks.

For his efforts, Davenport was selected the Falcons' offensive player of the game. Chasz Cosby (So./Charlotte, NC) was named the Falcons' defensive player of the game after leading the team with eight tackles including three tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks. Safety Justin Jones (Sr./Fort Valley, GA) and linebacker Tray King (So./Kershaw, SC) each had seven tackles with King adding two tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

For the Broncos, Bryant was 20 of 28 for 332 yards and four touchdown passes. Hubert grabbed six passes for 124 yards and one score, and Gatlin added five receptions for 99 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Seth Johnson recorded a game-high 13 tackles.

The Falcons return home for a Homecoming contest against Johnson C. Smith University next Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. The contest will be played at the George Williams Athletic Complex in Raleigh, N.C.
