Football Team Falls To Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. – Saint Augustine's University played Virginia State University close through three quarters on a rainy day, but the Falcons ultimately were defeated 24-0 in a CIAA football contest at Rogers Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015.

Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the Falcons only allowed a field goal in the third quarter. The Trojans put the game away with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Falcons kept the score respectable most of the contest even though the Trojans kept the ball longer (33:22 to 26:38 possession time) and gained more offensive yards (329 to 82). The Falcons forced the Trojans to punt eight times.

The defensive stalwarts for the Falcons were linemen Darius Goodman (So./Richmond, VA) and Chaz Cosby (So./Charlotte, NC). Both players each recorded six tackles including one tackle for loss.

Linebacker Cameron Brown (Fr./Decatur, GA) and defensive back Darius Cole (Fr./Pittsboro, NC) had five tackles apiece, and linebackers Juanyae Richardson (Fr./Lancaster, SC) and Tray King (So./Kershaw, SC) finished with four tackles each. King also collected a sack.

For the Trojans (3-2, 1-1 CIAA), Trenton Cannon rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Lynch registered a game-high 13 tackles.

The Falcons (0-5 overall, 0-2 CIAA) enter the second half of the season with three of their final five games at home. They will face five straight Southern Division opponents starting with Livingstone College at home on Saturday, Oct. 10. Game time is 1 p.m.
