Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. – Akera McPhaul (So./Greensboro, NC) totaled nine kills and Olivia Porter (Jr./Bakersfield, CA) added eight kills and 10 digs as Saint Augustine's University ended the regular season with a three-set CIAA volleyball loss to Shaw University at Spaulding Gymnasium on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015.
Despite the defeat, the Lady Falcons (12-13 overall, 8-8 CIAA) will advance to CIAA Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Southern Division. They will square off against Northern Division top seed Chowan University at Capel Arena in Fayetteville, N.C., on Friday, Nov. 20, at 12 p.m.
The Lady Falcons tied Livingstone College for fourth place in the Southern Division at 3-7, but earned a tournament berth based on a better conference record. Both teams split a pair of matches during the regular season. The top four teams in the Southern Division and Northern Division will compete in the league tournament.
After Livingstone lost to Winston-Salem State University Thursday, the Lady Falcons entered the season finale against Shaw (19-10 overall, 12-4 CIAA) having already clinched a spot in the CIAA Tourney. With a tournament berth sealed up, the Lady Falcons wanted to win for bragging rights against the Lady Bears.
The Lady Falcons nearly won the first two sets. They held a 23-21 lead in the first set, but the Lady Bears scored the last four points for the 25-23 win. In the second set, the Lady Falcons rallied from a 23-21 deficit and were one point away from winning four times, but the Lady Bears eventually pulled out the win 30-28.
The losses in the two sets appeared to take the steam out of the Lady Falcons in the third set. They lost by a score of 25-13.
Juliseea Thomas (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) added 15 assists and Zoey Isom (Fr./Phoenix, AZ) had 16 digs for the Lady Falcons. Meghan Mahon (Jr./Houston, TX) tallied four service aces, and Dionna Hopkins (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) and Mikayla Pettyjohn (So./Greensboro, NC) both finished with one solo block and two block assists.
Keveesha Wattley led the Lady Bears with 13 kills and Deja Simpson added 11 kills. Kelly Murphy chipped in nine kills, four service aces and 12 digs and Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez amassed 41 assists. Tiffany Brooks had 17 digs.
