Football Team Falls To Chowan In CIAA Opener

Box Score
MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Turnovers plagued Saint Augustine's University (SAU)  in a 49-0 football loss to Chowan University at Garrison Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015.

The Falcons committed eight turnovers in the contest. Six turnovers led to 36 points for the Hawks on a rainy day in the CIAA opener for both teams.

Even with the turnovers, the Falcons can point to their first possession as the game's turning point. Quarterback Julius Murphy (Redshirt So./Goldsboro, NC) spurted past the Chowan defense for a 27-yard touchdown run which would have given the Falcons their first lead of the season. However, a holding penalty negated the score.

The penalty was a letdown for the Falcons, who never regained momentum from that point. The Hawks scored on the ensuing possession for a 7-0 lead on Tyree Lee's 43-yard run. The Falcons almost caught a break on the drive when Keywan Morgan (Fr./LaGrange, NC) recovered a fumble, but the official ruled the play dead before the turnover.

After the Hawks scored, the Falcons threw two interceptions and lost a fumble which led to 16 points for the Hawks in the first half. The Falcons went into the locker room trailing 23-0 at halftime.

It was more of the same in the second half. The Hawks (3-1 overall, 1-0 CIAA) converted an interception into a touchdown less than three minutes into the third quarter for a 30-0 lead. The interception was the first of three turnovers which led to 20 second-half points for the Hawks.

Several Falcons battled hard on defense despite the score. Linebacker Terry Warren (So./Franklin, VA) led the Falcons with nine tackles including two tackles for loss, and defensive lineman Chasz Cosby (So./Charlotte, NC) totaled eight tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. Linebacker Cameron Brown (Fr./Decatur, GA) had seven tackles with one tackle for loss, and cornerback Denzel Watkins (Sr./Troutman, NC) collected six tackles with a vicious pass break-up and a blocked extra point.

For
the Hawks, Lee broke a school record with 223 rushing yards. Randall Dixon completed 10 of 17 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns.

The Falcons (0-4 overall, 0-1 CIAA) will play again on Saturday, Oct. 3, against CIAA opponent Virginia State University in Ettrick, Va. Game time is 2 p.m.
