Volleyball Team Hosts Winston-Salem State In Key CIAA Match Monday (Sept. 28)

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's University will host Winston-Salem State University in a key early season CIAA women's volleyball match at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, at 6 p.m. Admission is free.

The Lady Falcons (6-5 overall, 3-1 CIAA) are tied with Winston-Salem State and Shaw University for first place in the Southern Division at 1-0. All three teams are expected to be contenders for the division title this season.

The Lady Falcons will be shooting for their fourth straight victory on Monday. They are led by Olivia Porter (Jr./Bakersfield, CA), Juliseea Thomas (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands), Zoey Isom (Fr./Phoenix, AZ), Mikayla Pettyjohn (So./Jamestown, NC) and Shakera Hall (Fr./Bridgetown, Barbados).

Porter ranks second in kills (131) and third in kills per set (3.36) in the CIAA. Thomas ranks seventh in assists (206) and eighth in assists per set (5.28) in the CIAA.

Isom leads the CIAA in digs (202) and digs per set (5.18), and Pettyjohn ranks fifth in the conference in blocks per set (0.74). Hall, a CIAA Rookie of the Week winner, ranks second on the team in kills per set (1.96).

The Lady Falcons will face a tough Lady Rams squad (7-4 overall, 4-0 CIAA) led by Teynia Shepherd, Jasmine Smith, Rose Mitchell, Olivia Owens and Christa Brown.

Shepherd ranks third in kills (107) and fifth in kills per set (2.82) in the CIAA. Smith ranks fourth in assists per set (5.92), and Mitchell ranks third in service aces per set (0.66).

Owens leads the conference in blocks per set (0.89) and ranks third in hitting percentage (.247). Brown ranks third in the CIAA in blocks per set (0.82).

Both teams are among the league leaders offensively. The Lady Falcons and Lady Rams are tied for fourth in the CIAA in kills per set (9.82), but the Lady Rams have a higher hitting percentage (.192 to .119). The Lady Falcons lead the CIAA in digs per set (15.10), however.
