Lady Falcons Fall To Winston-Salem State In Volleyball

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shakera Hall (Fr./Bridgetown, Barbados) led Saint Augustine's University with five kills, but Winston-Salem State University defeated the Lady Falcons in three sets in a CIAA Southern Division volleyball match at Emery Gymnasium on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015.

he 25-15, 25-22, 25-12 loss snapped the Lady Falcons' three-match win streak. Their record is now 6-6 overall including 3-2 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Southern Division.

The Lady Rams remained atop the division at 2-0. They are 8-4 overall and 5-0 in the CIAA.

The match was billed as a highly-anticipated showdown between two division contenders. Both teams were in a three-way tie for first place entering the match.

The Lady Rams quickly asserted themselves in the first set, winning by 10 points. The second set was much closer with the Lady Falcons playing their best volleyball of the night. Trailing 19-14, the Lady Falcons closed to within 23-22 before the Lady Rams scored the last two points to claim the set. The Lady Rams won the third set easily to take the match.

Juliseea Thomas (Sr./St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) and Olivia Porter (Jr./Bakersfield, CA) both had four kills with Thomas adding 11 assists and eight digs for the Lady Falcons.  Zoey Isom (Fr./Phoenix, AZ) collected 23 digs and Porter had eight digs.

Jocelyn Mills and Teynia Shepherd both led the Lady Rams with nine kills. Jasmine Smith added 26 assists and Michelle Murray-Garcia finished with 23 digs while Sydney Holland had seven kills and 15 digs. Olivia Owens and Mills had five and four blocks, respectively.

The Lady Falcons will play three teams in the CIAA Round-Up II in Lincoln University, Pa., this weekend. They will face Bowie State University at 12 p.m. and The Lincoln (Pa.) University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Virginia Union University at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. The site will be Rivero Hall on The Lincoln (Pa.) University campus.
