Box Score Whittington Rushes For Career-High 100 Yards
RALEIGH, NC (Sept 10) – Today, Malik Mapps (Jr./Miami, FL) and Sam Boyd (So./Houston, TX) each scored a touchdown and Nate Whittington (Sr./Salisbury, MD) gained 100 yards for Saint Augustine's University in a 48-14 football loss to Carson-Newman University at the George Williams Athletic Complex.
Boyd scored late in the first quarter to pull the Falcons within 21-7. He leaped high over a defender to snag an eight-yard pass from D.J. Johnson (So./Richmond, VA) in the corner of the end zone. The touchdown was the first for the Falcons this season.
Mapps scored late in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run. Sean Smith (So./Valdosta, GA) made both point after attempts.
Whittington rushed for a career-high and hit the century mark for the first time in a Falcons uniform. He averaged 5.3 yards per attempt on 19 carries. His longest run was 25 yards.
The Falcons running back led an offense which had success against the Eagles (1-1). The Falcons rushed for 196 yards gained 21 first downs.
Johnson was a dual threat for the second straight week at the quarterback position. He threw for 152 yards and rushed for 66 yards. Boyd caught 10 passes for 66 yards which gives him 17 receptions in his first two games.
Defensively, the Falcons were led by defensive lineman Chasz Cosby (Jr./Charlotte, NC) who finished with a team-high eight tackles. Linebacker Antonio McCullough (Jr./Tampa, FL) collected six tackles including one tackle for loss while linebacker Larry Blanton (Fr./Charlotte, NC), defensive back Devin Borden (Jr./Florence, SC) and defensive lineman Keywan Morgan (So./LaGrange, NC) totaled five tackles each. Blanton tallied one tackle for loss and Morgan had 0.5 tackles for loss.
For the second straight week, the Falcons fell behind early. The Eagles returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and blocked a punt for another score in the game's first two minutes. The visitors scored again at the 8:24 mark of the first quarter before Boyd put the Falcons on the scoreboard.
Noah Suber completed 12 of 21 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles, who gained 488 total offensive yards. Darvia Dubose caught six passes for 104 yards and one score.
The Falcons visit North Carolina Central University next Saturday, Sept. 17 in Durham, N.C. at 6 p.m. This is their second matchup against a Division I FCS opponent this season.
