Loss Ends Challenging Non-Conference Schedule For Falcons

DURHAM, NC (Sept 17) – Saint Augustine's University's D.J. Johnson (So./Richmond, VA) hooked up with Sam Boyd (Jr./Houston, TX) for a touchdown and Darius Cole (So./Pittsboro, NC) picked off a pass against North Carolina Central University in a 65-7 football defeat at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

The loss ended a challenging non-conference schedule for the Falcons (0-3 overall). Two of the three contests were against Division I FCS squads. The Eagles picked up their first victory in three games.

On the Falcons' touchdown play, Boyd caught a short slant from Johnson and outraced the NCCU secondary for the 40-yard score. Sean Smith (R-So./Valdosta, GA) booted the extra point to trim the Falcons deficit to 28-7 in the second quarter.

The touchdown pass was the second this season for Johnson. The Falcons quarterback completed 15 of 27 pass attempts for 193 yards. He also was the team's rushing leader with 26 yards.

Boyd totaled five receptions for a team-high 87 yards. He entered the contest leading the CIAA in receptions. Lenwood Joyner (So./Miami, FL) caught a team-high seven passes for 48 yards.

Defensively, Cole recorded his sixth career interception at midfield in the second quarter. He is only four away from tying the modern school career record of 10 set by J.J. Cooper from 2011 to 2014. Cole nearly came up with another interception in the NCCU end zone late in the contest.

Defensive back Denzel Malone-Huff (Jr./Gadsden, AL) led the Falcons with 10 tackles. Linebackers Antonio McCullough (Jr./Tampa, FL) and Jalahne Stroud (So./Kenansville, NC) each collected eight tackles. On special teams, Rontei Wilkes (So./Charlotte, NC) averaged 20.2 yards on kickoff returns.

After playing three straight tough opponents, the Falcons host Lincoln (Pa.) University in their CIAA opener on Saturday, Sept. 24. The contest will be held at the George Williams Athletic Complex at 1 p.m.
