SAU Volleyball Visits Johnson C. Smith Thursday (Sept. 21) In CIAA Southern Division Opener

RALEIGH, NC (Sept. 20) - The Saint Augustine's University volleyball team enters CIAA Southern Division play on Thursday, Sept. 21 when the Lady Falcons visit Johnson C. Smith University at Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte, N.C. Match time is 6 p.m.

Despite starting the season later than most teams, the Lady Falcons displayed competitive fire at the CIAA Roundup I in Winston-Salem, N.C., this past weekend. Led by the brilliance of outside hitter Shakera Hall (Jr./Bridgetown, Barbados), the Lady Falcons played Chowan University close in a three-set match and took Virginia Union University to four sets before toppling Lincoln (Pa.) University in three sets for a 1-2 record.

The Lady Falcons look to bring that same attitude to Brayboy Gymnasium Thursday against the Golden Bulls, who are off to their best start in the past 10 years. Sporting a 4-0 mark, the Golden Bulls are searching for their first victory over the Lady Falcons since 2014. The four-match win streak is the longest in seven years.

The Lady Falcons seek to snap the streak behind the play of Hall and several talented newcomers. Hall was named CIAA Volleyball Player of the Week after averaging a whopping 7.50 kills per set and 3.10 digs per set at the CIAA Roundup I. She currently is the NCAA Division II national leader in kills per set, points per set and attacks per set.

Freshmen Taylor Irving (Litchfield, AZ) and Mechele Moss (Nassau, Bahamas) had strong debuts. Irving averages nine assists per set and 2.20 digs per set and Moss averages two kills per set and three digs per set.

The Golden Bulls are led by Karina Pressoir, one of six players who average more than one kill per set. Azha McNeil is the team's assist leader and Georgina Diaz is the top defensive player on the team.

After facing Johnson C. Smith, the Lady Falcons will host Winston-Salem State University in their home opener on Monday, Sept. 25 at Emery Gymnasium. The match will start at 6 p.m.
