SAU Football Falls To Tusculum In Season Opener

Box Score GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 1) – Wide receiver Jordan Black (So./Monroe, NC) and quarterback Christopher Perkins (So./Spring Lake, NC) both scored for Saint Augustine's University in a 70-13 non-conference loss to Tusculum in its football season opener at Pioneer Field on Thursday night.

Trailing 14-0 early, SAU got on the scoreboard in the second quarter when Black took a shovel pass from Perkins and juked his way around the left sideline for the score. The 15-yard pass was SAU's first touchdown of the season and pulled the Falcons within 14-6.

Antonio King (Fr./Bayboro, NC) set up the Falcons' touchdown with an interception deep in Tusculum territory.

The Falcons played hard in the first half but were undone by three straight interceptions in the second quarter. The turnovers led to 14 Tusculum points to help the Pioneers (1-0) build a 35-6 halftime lead.

Perkins scored in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard scramble. He finished the night with one passing touchdown and one rushing score. The SAU quarterback passed for 133 yards but tossed two interceptions. Black caught four passes for 48 yards.

Defensively, linebacker Lee Sales (So./Winston-Salem, NC) led SAU with nine tackles. Linebacker Jamieson Alston (Fr./Fayetteville, NC) added six tackles.

Tre Simmons threw five touchdown passes for Tusculum.

SAU is back in action Sept. 10 when it hosts Limestone in its home opener at the George Williams Athletic Complex. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
