PEMBROKE, NC --Lauren Banks, Taniyah Greene and Joscelyn Meyers combined to score 39 of Saint Augustine's 52 total points, but the Falcons fell to the North Carolina-Pembroke Braves 61-52 on the road Saturday.
Banks led the Falcons (2-1) with 15 points. Greene tacked on a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds and Meyers chipped in as well with 10 points off of the bench.
Saint Augustine's collected 42 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to North Carolina-Pembroke's 41, led by Greene's 15 boards. The Falcons also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 13 rebounds into 11 second chance points.
The Saint Augustine's defense held North Carolina-Pembroke shooters to just 34.7 percent from the field. The Falcons also kept Zaria Clark to 3-of-12 shooting in the game. The Braves did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored 11 second chance points while Saint Augustine's pulled down 29 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-6, Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run with 3:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Prophet Sheffield, to take an 11-9 lead. The Falcons then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 13-11.
North Carolina-Pembroke kept adding to that lead, building a 16-13 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Sheffield, to take a 20-16 lead. The Braves cut into that lead, but the Falcons still enjoyed a 26-24 advantage heading into halftime. Saint Augustine's forced four North Carolina-Pembroke turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.
North Carolina-Pembroke then took a 40-34 lead following intermission before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Meyers, to trim its deficit to 40-39 with 2:09 to go in the third. North Carolina-Pembroke countered and stretched its lead to 45-42 heading into the fourth. Saint Augustine's knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 16 total points.
North Carolina-Pembroke kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-47 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Banks' three, to shrink the deficit to 61-52 with two seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Saint Augustine's fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
