Defensive effort not enough as Saint Augustine's falls to Winthrop 62-55

ROCK HILL, SC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team kept Winthrop to just 6.7 percent from deep in a 1-for-15 shooting performance, but fell 62-55 to the Eagles on the road Tuesday.

The Falcons (2-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Lauren Banks, who had 18 points. Prophet Sheffield tacked on 12 points and four assists and Jamiah Richardson added eight points and six rebounds.

Led by Richardson's two offensive rebounds, Saint Augustine's did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.

The Saint Augustine's defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Tuesday's game, forcing 16 Winthrop turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Janiya Reed led the way individually for the Falcons with two steals.

Winthrop kept adding to that lead, building a 20-15 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a three from Richardson, to take a 23-20 lead. The Falcons proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 29-24 advantage heading into halftime. Saint Augustine's dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 16 points close to the basket.

Saint Augustine's wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Keziah Soogrim, to expand its lead further to 37-24 with 8:09 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 43-42 edge. Saint Augustine's knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 14 total points.

Winthrop then erased the Saint Augustine's lead in the game's final quarter for a 62-55 comeback victory. Saint Augustine's fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 12 points.
