BUCKHANNON, WV --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team rallied from a 10-point deficit at 58-48 with 9:43 remaining in the fourth quarter to take down the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 76-69 on the road Saturday
The Falcons (3-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Janiya Reed, who had 21 points, six rebounds and four steals. Lauren Banks added 17 points and three steals and Joscelyn Meyers added four points and eight assists.
Saint Augustine's shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 17 assists on 30 made field goals. Meyers' eight assists led the Falcons and Ashanti Broughton also helped out with four assists of her own.
Saint Augustine's forced 21 West Virginia Wesleyan turnovers while committing only nine themselves in Saturday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 25 points on the other end of the floor. Reed's four steals led the way for Saint Augustine's.
How It Happened
Saint Augustine's struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-12 at the end of the first quarter.
West Virginia Wesleyan kept adding to that lead, building a 37-21 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Jamiah Richardson, to narrow its deficit to 37-27. West Virginia Wesleyan responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Falcons trailing 39-27 heading into halftime.
West Virginia Wesleyan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 54-37 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Broughton, to trim its deficit to 54-44 with 2:21 to go in the third. West Virginia Wesleyan countered and stretched its lead to 58-46 heading into the fourth. Saint Augustine's took advantage of six West Virginia Wesleyan turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of takeaways.
Saint Augustine's narrowed its deficit to 60-52 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Reed's three, to even the score at 60 all with 6:50 to go in the contest. The Falcons kept the rally going and took the lead for good on Desiree Roy's free throw with 03:21 left to grab the 76-69 victory. Saint Augustine's fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 30 points.
