Defensive effort leads Saint Augustine's over 110-40

RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team kept Clinton College to just 16.7 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-18 shooting performance on the way to a 110-40 victory against the at home Wednesday.

The Falcons (4-1) had five players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who secured a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Janiya Reed added 16 points, six rebounds and six steals from the bench and Ashanti Broughton chipped in as well with 14 points, eight rebounds and seven steals from the bench.

Saint Augustine's shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 25 assists on 46 made field goals. Individually, Shikira Perry dished out the most for the Falcons with five assists and Joscelyn Meyers also chipped in with four assists of her own.

Saint Augustine's defense held to only 32.6 percent shooting from the field, including 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Falcons also limited Caleah Smith to 3-of-14 shooting and eight points in the game. The did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with four offensive rebounds and managed zero second chance points while Saint Augustine's cleared 33 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's started out the scoring by going on a 14-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Broughton, to take an early lead with 4:38 left in the first quarter. The Falcons then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 24-5 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 24 points close to the basket.

Saint Augustine's built that first quarter lead to 40-14 before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 3:58 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 49-14. The cut into that lead, but the Falcons still enjoyed a 53-20 advantage heading into halftime. Saint Augustine's dominated in the paint, scoring 18 of its 29 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Saint Augustine's continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 61-27 before going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Reed, to expand its lead further to 75-27 with 1:11 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 78-31 edge. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring 18 of its 25 points in the paint.

Saint Augustine's kept widening that lead, expanding it to 83-35 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Greene's layup, to grow the lead to 93-35 with 4:39 to go in the contest. The Falcons kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 110-40 win. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 20 of its 32 points in the paint.
