BLUEFIELD, WV --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team got a 19-point performance from the bench, but fell 66-57 to the Bluefield State Lady Blues on the road Monday.
The Falcons (6-2, 0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Banks tacked on 11 points and four assists and Janiya Reed helped out with 10 points and two steals from the bench.
Saint Augustine's grabbed 41 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Bluefield State's 40. The Falcons also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 15 rebounds into 17 second chance points.
Saint Augustine's forced 25 Bluefield State turnovers. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Joscelyn Meyers led the way individually with five steals.
How It Happened
Saint Augustine's struggled out of the gate, falling behind 22-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Falcons and Lady Blues then played an even second quarter making the halftime score 38-23 in favor of Bluefield State.
Bluefield State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 53-29 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Reed, to trim its deficit to 53-37 with 2:47 to go in the third. Bluefield State countered and stretched its lead to 57-37 heading into the fourth. Saint Augustine's knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 14 total points.
Bluefield State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 60-38 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Greene's layup, to shrink the deficit to 60-48 with 3:03 to go in the contest. The Falcons kept their comeback going, but Bluefield State managed to hold on for the 66-57 win. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
