PETERSBURG, VA --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team got a 28-point performance from the bench, but fell 76-63 to the Virginia State Trojans on the road Thursday.
The Falcons (6-3, 0-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Prophet Sheffield, who had 11 points and two steals. Joscelyn Meyers tacked on 10 points and Jamiah Richardson added eight points and two steals.
Saint Augustine's forced 24 Virginia State turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Thursday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Greene led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Saint Augustine's struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Falcons continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-25 halftime deficit.
Virginia State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-33 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Janiya Reed, to trim its deficit to 51-39 with 3:55 to go in the third. The Falcons continued to reduce the Virginia State lead, shrinking it to 56-45 by the end of the third quarter. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring 20 of its 20 points in the paint.
Saint Augustine's could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 76-63. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
