ELIZABETH CITY, NC --Taniyah Greene and Lauren Banks both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Saint Augustine's women's basketball team over the Elizabeth City State Vikings 79-67 on the road Monday.
The Falcons (7-3, 1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Greene, who put together a double-double with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Banks tacked on a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Joscelyn Meyers helped out with 10 points and seven assists.
Saint Augustine's shared the ball well in Monday's game, racking up 23 assists on 28 made field goals. Individually, Meyers led the way for the Falcons with seven assists.
The Saint Augustine's defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 17 Elizabeth City State turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the other end of the floor. Jamiah Richardson's four steals led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-4, Saint Augustine's went on a 13-0 run with 6:12 left in the first quarter to take a 17-6 lead. The Falcons then added four points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 28-13 advantage. Saint Augustine's did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 28 points close to the basket.
The Falcons maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 42-38 edge. Saint Augustine's saw non-starters score five of its 14 total points off the bench in the quarter.
Saint Augustine's wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Greene, to expand its lead further to 50-38 with 7:28 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Vikings had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 60-50 edge. Saint Augustine's took advantage of four Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
Saint Augustine's kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Greene's layup, to grow the lead to 79-67 with 11 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Saint Augustine's got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring eight fast break points.
