Saint Augustine's falls to Converse 65-50 after close finish

RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team went into the fourth quarter tied 41-41 with Converse, but could not take control and fell 65-50 to the Valkyries at home Sunday.

Taniyah Greene led the Falcons (7-4) with 18 points and seven rebounds. Jamiah Richardson added nine points and seven rebounds and Janiya Reed chipped in as well with four points and two steals.

Saint Augustine's out-rebounded Converse 45-35 in Sunday's game, led by Greene's seven boards. The Falcons also grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points.

The Saint Augustine's defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Sunday's game, forcing 16 Converse turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Reed's two steals led the way individually for the Falcons.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's started off strong, putting together a 13-11 lead heading into the second quarter. Saint Augustine's got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for four of its 13 total points.

The Falcons maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 26-24 edge. Saint Augustine's dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 13 points close to the basket.

Saint Augustine's wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Reed, to expand its lead further to 33-24 with 7:41 to go in the third. The Valkyries then rallied to tie it at 41-41 heading into the fourth quarter. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.

Converse broke the tie, taking control in the final quarter winning 65-50. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
