RALEIGH, NC --Taniyah Greene hit a game-tying shot with 1:42 left in regulation to send the game to overtime and Lauren Banks put the Saint Augustine's women's basketball team ahead for good with 1:14 to go the extra period to give the Falcons a 58-53 win over the Virginia Union Panthers at home Thursday.
The Falcons (8-4, 2-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had 12 points. Janiya Reed tacked on 11 points and three steals and Banks added eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Led by Banks' five offensive rebounds, Saint Augustine's did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 20 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
The Saint Augustine's defense held Virginia Union shooters to only 28.1 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range. The Falcons also kept Ny Langley to 2-of-12 shooting in the game.
How It Happened
Saint Augustine's struggled out of the gate, falling behind 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Virginia Union kept adding to that lead, building a 20-14 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Greene, to tie the game at 20. Virginia Union then took control, putting the Falcons at a 25-20 disadvantage heading into halftime.
Virginia Union continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 28-20 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jamiah Richardson, to trim its deficit to 28-26 with 6:43 to go in the third. Virginia Union countered and stretched its lead to 36-31 heading into the fourth. Saint Augustine's took advantage of seven Virginia Union turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
Saint Augustine's narrowed its deficit to 38-34 before going on a 7-0 run to seize a 41-38 lead with 5:56 to go in the fourth. The Panthers then fought back to even things up at 47-47 and send the game to overtime. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
Virginia Union then snagged a 53-52 advantage with 1:14 left in the first overtime before Saint Augustine's responded by going on a 6-0 run to seize a 58-53 lead with six seconds to go in the period, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
