Saint Augustine's late rally falls short in 63-60 loss to Johnson C. Smith

GREENVILLE, SC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team pieced together a comeback late in Monday's game, outscoring Johnson C. Smith 16-8 in the final five minutes, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Golden Bulls 63-60.

The Falcons (9-6, 3-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Taniyah Greene, who had 14 points and two blocks. Lauren Banks added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Joscelyn Meyers added seven points and three steals.

Led by Keziah Soogrim's three offensive rebounds, Saint Augustine's did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards.

Saint Augustine's defense held Johnson C. Smith to only 35.2 percent shooting from the field, including 22.2 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Saint Augustine's entered the second quarter tied at 13-13 after a tightly contested first period.

The Falcons proceeded to outscore the Golden Bulls 17-14 in the second quarter to take a 30-27 halftime lead. Saint Augustine's saw non-starters score six of its 17 total points off the bench in the quarter.

Saint Augustine's then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Golden Bulls 42-38 entering the fourth. Saint Augustine's played well near the basket, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.

Johnson C. Smith kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 55-43 advantage before Saint Augustine's went on a 9-0 run to shrink the deficit to 55-52 with 2:33 to go in the contest. The Falcons were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 63-60. Saint Augustine's took advantage of five Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off of those takeaways.
