Saint Augustine's rallies late, but falls to Bowie State 65-63

RALEIGH, NC --The Saint Augustine's women's basketball team took a 53-43 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 65-63 to the Bowie State Bulldogs at home Saturday.

The Falcons (8-5, 2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Lauren Banks, who had 15 points and two blocks. Taniyah Greene tacked on 12 points and six rebounds and Joscelyn Meyers chipped in as well with 10 points.

Saint Augustine's out-rebounded Bowie State 44-31 in Saturday's game, paced by nine boards from Keziah Soogrim. The Falcons also pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points.

The Saint Augustine's defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Bowie State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into six points on the offensive end of the floor. Janiya Reed's three steals led the way individually for the Falcons.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 13-10 advantage, Saint Augustine's went on a 9-0 run with 5:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Prophet Sheffield, to increase its lead to 22-10. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 26-15 advantage. Saint Augustine's got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 26 total points.

The Falcons used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 35-21 edge. Saint Augustine's dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its nine points close to the basket.

After intermission, Saint Augustine's held on to its advantage and owned a 53-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Saint Augustine's scored four fast break points in the quarter.

Bowie State then erased the Saint Augustine's lead in the game's final quarter for a 65-63 comeback victory. Saint Augustine's took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
