Joel Kindred Scores 27 In Falcons' Loss To Barton

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - Joel Kindred (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) of Saint Augustine's College led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting including 3-of-5 three pointers, but Barton College had too much depth in a 79-72 basketball win over the Falcons Saturday in the ECSU Classic at the Vaughn Center hosted by Elizabeth City State.

The loss was the second in a row for the Falcons, who fell to 1-2 overall. Barton improved to 2-1 overall.

Shaun Washum (Sr./Norfolk, Va.) added 14 points and Keith McAllister (Jr./Queens, N.Y.) scored 11 points for the Falcons. Barton countered with 15 points from Greg Mammel, 13 from Jaren Haley, 12 from R.D. Dowdy and 11 from Gerald Boston. L.J. Dunn added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs outscored the Falcons 40-18 in bench points with the bulk of the scoring coming from reserves Mammel and Dowdy. Jon Benitez added nine points off the bench.

A balanced attack enabled the Bulldogs to stay ahead the entire game. Their lead was 35-19 at halftime as the Falcons shot 21 percent in the first half. 

The Falcons heated up in the second half, shooting 54 percent which helped them scare the Bulldogs late.Trailing 70-55 with 2:20 left in the game, the Falcons went on a 14-5 run to shrink the deficit to 75-69 with 28 seconds left. That was a close as they would get, however, despite outscoring the Bulldogs 53-44 in the second half.

The Falcons made 25-of-61 shots for 41 percent for the game. The Bulldogs also shot 41 percent on 26-of-64 shooting but made 23-of-28 free throw attempts for 82 percent.

After three consecutive away games, the Falcons play their home opener Dec. 11 in Emery Gymnasium. Their opponent is Mount Olive at 7:30 p.m.
