Falcons Trip Virginia State 90-71

ETTRICK, Va. – Steven Brignol (Sr./Brooklyn, N.Y.) led five double-figure scorers with 18 points as Saint Augustine's College exploded in the second half for a 90-71 CIAA basketball victory over Virginia State University on Monday (Jan. 11) at Daniel Gymnasium.

 

Shaun Washum (Jr./Norfolk, Va.) added 17 points, Hayward Fain (Jr./Akron, Ohio) scored 15 and Chris Jordan (Sr./Houston, Texas) and Keith McAllister (So./Queens, NY) both added 12 points for the Falcons, who lifted their record to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the CIAA.

 

All five players contributed in the second half when the Falcons turned a 41-32 halftime lead into a double-digit margin for most of the last 20 minutes. The Falcons shot 56 percent and scored 49 points in the second half.

 

Overall, the Falcons shot 48 percent and the Trojans shot 44 percent, but the Falcons dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Trojans 44-20 including 21-5 in offensive rebounds. Fain led the Falcons with nine rebounds.

 

Trey Mines paced four Trojans in double figures with 20 points. Ricardo Lipscomb added 13, Brandon Plummer scored 12 and Clifton Springfield-Cobb had 10.

 

The Falcons will host Saint Paul's College on Saturday (Jan. 16) at Emery Gymnasium in a CIAA contest. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
