RICHMOND, Va. - Saint Augustine's College nearly pulled off a big win over Virginia Union on Thursday.
With the score tied 54-54, the Falcons had possession with 28.4 seconds left, but the Panthers scored the last four points for a 58-54 CIAA men's basketball win at Barco-Stevens Hall. The loss was the first in three CIAA games for the Falcons (3-8 overall, 2-1 CIAA), who visit Bowie State on Saturday in a televised game at 5 p.m.
Guards Nick Chamblee (Soph./Hampton, Va.) scored 12 points and Joel Kindred (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) added 11 points including eight in the second half when the Falcons chopped away at a seven-point halftime deficit (37-30) by holding the Panthers (5-4, 3-1) to 25 percent shooting in the half.
The Falcons took their first lead since the game's start on a three-point play by Keith McAllister (Jr./Queens, N.Y.) and a free throw by Shaun Washum (Sr./Norfolk, Va.) for a 54-52 lead with 2:54 left.
The Panthers' Juan Wilson, who scored eight of his 12 points in the second half, hit a jumper to tie the game. After a Falcon timeout, Wayne Ford of the Panthers stole a pass and was fouled as he drove for a layup. His two free throws put the Panthers up by two with 23 seconds left.
Jon Kindred of the Falcons missed a lean-in jumper, and James Theus, who led all scorers with 14 points, iced the game for the Panthers with two free throws with less than a second remaining. For the game, Theus was 4-for-6 from the three-point arc and Braxton Byerson added 11 points for the Panthers.
Bothered by the Panthers' traps early on, the Falcons fell behind 34-15 with eight minutes left in the first half. The Falcons climbed back in the game behind Chamblee, who scored six first-half points including two three-pointers. Washum added five points in the first half.
