RALEIGH, N.C. – The Saint Augustine's College men's and women's basketball teams are asking fans, students, faculty, staff and community to donate pairs of shoes as part of Share Our Shoes Night which will be held Monday (Jan. 17) at the CIAA home basketball doubleheader against Chowan University at Emery Gymnasium. The women's contest begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
In show of support, men's head coach Ken Spencer and women's head coach Rachel Bullard of Saint Augustine's will coach Monday without their shoes on. The Chowan men's and women's head coaches had planned to coach without their shoes on as well.
The Falcons and Lady Falcons are collaborating with the North Carolina Central University men's basketball team and the Share Our Shoes organization to send a goal of 1 million pair of shoes to the Haiti earthquake victims. Share Our Shoes (SOS) is a shoe charity dedicated to recycling shoes for those desperate in need. NCCU men's basketball coach LeVelle Moton is the official spokesperson for SOS.
“We are excited to join Save Our Shoes and NCCU for a great cause,” Lady Falcon basketball coach Rachel Bullard said.
A drop box will be located inside the gymnasium doors. SOS will accept any size, type and style of shoes no matter the condition with a preference for women's dress shoes.
“This is a great occasion of trying to give back,” Falcon basketball coach Ken Spencer said. “Our program is happy to be a part of this.”
