Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. – Joel Kindred (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) was named the CIAA's top rookie the last two weeks, and he is gunning for it again a third consecutive time.

Kindred pumped in 21 points as Saint Augustine's College nipped Chowan 63-59 on Monday in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium on Martin Luther King Day. The Falcons (4-9 overall, 3-2 CIAA) bounced back from two straight road losses behind the play of Kindred, who made 9-of-18 shots.

His brother Jon Kindred (Soph./Raleigh, N.C.) added 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting and Darrell Glass (Jr./Washington, D.C.) scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting including three big baskets down the stretch.

Glass' converted back-to-back three-point plays to turn a 55-52 deficit into a 58-55 Falcon lead with 3:28 to play. On the Falcons' next possession, Glass made a layup and was fouled, giving him the opportunity for his third three-point play in a row. He missed the free throw, however, and the score stayed 60-57 Falcons with 2:47 left.

The Hawks (1-12, 0-5 CIAA) inched within two points at 60-58, but Joel Kindred, Terell Burgess (Sr./Syracuse, N.Y.) and Glass each nailed a free throw to finish off the Hawks.

Quinton McDuffie was a bright spot for the Hawks, connecting on 10-of-13 shots to tie Kindred for game-high honors with 21 points. He also had nine rebounds. Charles Rhodes added 13 points for the Hawks, who led 31-30 at halftime after falling behind by 14 in the first half. The Hawks' lead grew to 41-34 early in the second half before a Joel Kindred-led rally put the Falcons ahead 48-47. Kindred scored 11 points during the run.

The Falcons visit Elizabeth City State on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks travel to Bowie State for a 7:30 p.m. contest on Saturday.

Monday's game was designated as Share Our Shoes Night. Coaches from both Saint Augustine's College men's and women's teams did not wear shoes on the sidelines in support of the Haiti earthquake victims. Fans donated shoes which will be sent to Haiti. The Lady Falcons' men's team collaborated with the Saint Augustine's College women's basketball team, the North Carolina Central men's basketball team and the Share Our Shoes charity organization. The goal is to send 1 million pair of shoes to Haiti.
