RALEIGH, N.C. – Playing in Emery Gymnasium brings out the best in Nick Chamblee (Soph./Hampton, Va.).
Chamblee, a point guard, scored a career-high 20 points and recorded a steal with one second left to preserve a 68-64 victory for Saint Augustine's College over cross-town rival Shaw Saturday in packed Emery Gymnasium. The Falcons (5-10 overall, 4-3 CIAA) have now won 10 straight men's basketball games over the Bears (11-6, 4-4 CIAA), who last won in the season series in 2005.
"For us to get a win against Shaw at home is big," said Falcon Head Coach Ken Spencer, who is 1-0 vs. Shaw. "The crowd was unbelieveable."
Chamblee made a half-court three-point bank shot at the horn for the final margin. Darrell Glass (Jr./Washington, D.C.) hit the game-winning free throw with five seconds left to give the Falcons a 65-64 lead.
Chamblee added game-highs of five assists and four steals for the Falcons. He made 7-of-8 shots including 4-of-4 from behind the three-point line and was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. Chris Johnson (Redshirt Freshman, Hampton, Va.) scored a career-high 14 points and Joel Kindred (Fr./Raleigh, N.C.) finished with 12 points. The Falcons had eight assists and only seven turnovers.
"I was proud of our overall team effort," Spencer said. "This is the first game we've had more assists than turnovers."
Chamblee has a knack for stellar games at home this season. His four-point play with 14 seconds left knocked off Saint Paul's 66-63 on Jan. 8. He scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting including 4-of-4 behind the three-point arc in that contest despite sitting out the first half.
The Falcons are 3-0 in league games at home with the average margin of victory being 3.7 points. They claimed their latest win by shooting 51 percent including an astounding 67 percent in the second half which helped the Falcons build a 61-54 lead with 6:48 left on Chamblee's three-pointer.
Raheem Smith, the CIAA's scoring leader, scored 22 points for the Bears, including a three-pointer which tied the score at 64-64 with 24 seconds left. His basket capped a 10-3 run for the Bears.
Glass, who had nine points and five rebounds for the Falcons, was fouled on a drive with five seconds left. He made one of two free throws for a one-point Falcons lead.
Chamblee stopped the clock with 2.2 seconds left by knocking the ball out-of-bounds from Smith, who was driving down the baseline. After a Shaw timeout, Chamblee stole the ball and launched a successful midcourt shot which brought the pro-Falcons crowd to its feet.
Jon Kindred (Soph./Raleigh, N.C.) scored seven points for the Falcons, who host the University of D.C. in a non-conference game Monday at 7:30 p.m. Jaime Boyer added 11 points for the Bears, who visit Livingstone next Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
