WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore guard-forward Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) scored 18 of his career-high 21 points in the second half to spark a Saint Augustine's College rally, but Winston-Salem State pulled away late for an 86-67 win over the Falcons Saturday in a CIAA Southern Division men's basketball game at C.E. Gaines Center.
Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.), who is Jon's brother, added 17 points and seven rebounds including a vicious two-handed dunk over a defender for the Falcons (6-11, 4-4 CIAA, 1-1 Southern Division), who shot 52 percent in the second half to trim a 47-29 halftime deficit to 56-52 with 9:16 left in the game. The Rams (14-3, 7-2 CIAA, 2-0 Southern Division) then went on an 18-5 run in the next four minutes to push their lead to 17 points.
Lamar Monger led WSSU with 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting including 3-of-3 behind the three-point line. McIntoche Alcius added 15 points, Andrew Jackson contributed 12 points and Paul Davis had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Rams, who shot 54 percent and converted 18 Falcon turnovers including 14 steals into 26 points. The Rams made 56 percent of their shots in the first half in opening an 18-point halftime lead. The Rams also outshot the Falcons at the free-throw line, making 29 of 43 free throws for 67 percent compared to 14 of 29 free throws for 48 percent for the Falcons.
Senior forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) added eight points and redshirt freshman guard-forward Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) added six points for the Falcons. The contest was a homecoming for Falcon Head Coach Ken Spencer, who was an associate head coach at WSSU for four years before coming to Saint Augustine's College.
The Falcons play their second away game in a row when the visit Livingstone College Monday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
