SALISBURY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College let one slip away in an 85-80 men's basketball overtime loss to Catawba College Friday (Nov. 18) in the Salisbury Roundball Classic at Goodman Gym.
The Falcons were outscored 10-5 in overtime after a 10-point lead evaporated in the final 5:51 of regulation. Down two with an opportunity to tie in overtime, the Falcons committed a turnover with 36 seconds left. The Indians secured the win with three consecutive free throws in the final 15 seconds.
Sophomore guard
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Falcons with 19 points. Redshirt sophomore swingman
Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) added 15 points and junior swingman
Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) scored 13 points for the Falcons, who fell to 1-1 overall. Keon Moore paced Catawba with 35 points, including three late free throws to seal the game. Lee Martin added 13 for the Indians, who upped their record to 2-1.
The Falcons had a chance to ice the game in regulation. Leading by three, they missed the back end of a one-and-one with eight seconds left, opening the door for Moore to force overtime with a three-pointer before the horn sounded.
The loss ruined a solid effort by the Falcons, who took care of the basketball (8 turnovers) and shot well from the free throw line (20 of 27 for 74 percent). The Falcons led most of the way but were eventually undone by 38 percent field-goal shooting. The Indians connected on 46 percent of their shots and made 9 of 22 treys to offset their woes at the free throw line (24 of 40 for 60 percent).
The Falcons must put this game behind them and get ready Saturday (Nov. 19) for Alabama-Huntsville, ranked No. 2 in the NABC Division II Coaches Poll. Game time is 4 p.m. at Goodman Gym.
