Falcons Pull Away Against Barber-Scotia 70-53

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College relied on its depth to wear down Barber-Scotia College 70-53 Wednesday (Dec. 14) in a non-conference men's basketball game at Emery Gymnasium.
 
Sophomore guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) scored 13 points and sophomore guard Chris Rhodes (Greenville, S.C.) added 10 points, 8 assists and 8 rebounds for the Falcons, who evened their record at 4-4 overall. The Falcons fended off pesky Barber-Scotia (2-14 overall) by outscoring their opponent 47-7 in bench points.
 
Fourteen players scored for the Falcons, who led by a slim 33-28 margin at halftime. Senior guard Jeremy Banks (Elizabeth City, N.C.) added eight points and Jonathan Crawley, a 6-foot-8, 340-pound freshman center from Richmond, Va., scored seven points and pulled down six rebounds.
 
Carlos Benton scored 14 points while Kevontae Hairlson and Joe Miller each added 10 points for the Sabers, who actually outshot the Falcons 46 percent to 42 percent in the first half. The Sabers, who dressed 10 players, trailed most of the contest, but stayed within 10 points until the nine-minute mark of the second half.
 
The Falcons made one final push to win by double digits. They pulled away on a 19-10 run which featured three slams in the final minute including two by Kindred and one by sophomore guard Tyron Laughinghouse (Greenville, N.C.), who had six points and six rebounds.
 
The Falcons heated up in the second half, shooting 48 percent. The Sabers cooled off at 35 percent in the half as they ran out of steam late. The Falcons ended up shooting 45 percent for the game while holding the Sabers to 40 percent.
 
The Falcons will take a 16-day holiday break before hitting the court at the West Florida Tournament, which will be held Dec. 30-31 in Pensacola, Fla. They will tangle against host West Florida on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m., and North Alabama Dec. 31 at 4 p.m.
