WILSON, N.C. – Coming off a hard-fought win the night before, Saint Augustine's College ran out of gas in a 62-53 men's basketball loss to Mount Olive College Saturday (Dec. 3) afternoon on the final day of the Barton 45-Second Classic in Wilson Gymnasium.
The Falcons (3-3 overall) entered the contest against Mount Olive after topping host Barton College 80-75 in overtime approximately 16 hours earlier in the event. Showing no effects early on from the previous night, the Falcons opened a 36-24 halftime lead over Mount Olive behind 11 points from senior guard
Jeremy Banks (Elizabeth City, N.C.), who was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor including 1-for-1 behind the three-point line. The Falcons shot 65 percent in the first half on 15-for-23 shooting.
The second half was an entirely different story. The Falcons, looking fatigued, were outscored 38-17 and shot 25 percent on 5-for-20 shooting. Mount Olive (6-1 overall) finished the final six minutes on a 13-4 run to break a 49-49 tie.
The 53 points were the lowest output for the Falcons this season. The 62 points scored by Mount Olive was the lowest point total for a Falcons' opponent this season.
Banks led the Falcons with a season-high 17 points on 8-for-10 shooting and junior guard
David Brown (Richmond, Va.) added 10 points. Redshirt sophomore
Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) chipped in nine points for the Falcons, who shot 47 percent for the game. Craig Hayes led Mount Olive with 12 points and Derek Staton added 11 points. Mount Olive shot 46 percent for the contest.
The Falcons' next game is Dec. 14 at home against Barber-Scotia College. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
