PETERSBURG, Va. - Junior forward Darrell Glass (Washington, D.C.) scored a career-high 20 points to lead four players in double figures as Saint Augustine's College tripped Virginia State 71-67 Thursday in a CIAA men's basketball game at Daniel Gym.
Glass made 6 of 11 shots and 8 of 9 free throws for the Falcons (7-14 overall, 5-7 CIAA), who ended a four-game losing streak. Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) added 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting while senior forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) and freshman guard Tyron Laughinghouse (Greenville, N.C.) both had 10 points.
Joel Kindred's layup with 5:22 in the first half gave the Falcons a 22-21 lead which they never relinquished. The lead grew to 53-41 with 9:55 remaining in the second half on another layup by Joel Kindred before the Trojans (4-18, 3-11 CIAA) made a late run. The Trojans came within four points on four occasions including the final score, but that was as close as they would get. The Falcons hit 7 of 9 free throws in the final two minutes for the win.
Justin Bess scored 15 points and Brandon Plummer added 14 points for the Trojans. Both teams shot 44 percent but the Falcons dominated inside, outscoring the Trojans 38-16 in the lane and turning 20 offensive rebounds into 22 points. Glass led the Falcons with seven rebounds while sophomore guard-forward Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.), junior guard Jeremy Banks and Laughinghouse each had six rebounds.
The Falcons are back home Saturday in a CIAA Southern Division contest against Johnson C. Smith at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 4 p.m.
