RALEIGH, N.C. – Sophomore guard Nick Chamblee (Hampton, Va.) scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as Saint Augustine's College took charge in the second half to win 83-71 over visiting Johnson C. Smith Saturday in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Emery Gymnasium.
The Falcons (8-14 overall, 6-7 CIAA, 2-4 Southern Division) outscored the Golden Bulls 52-34 in the second half to erase a 37-31 halftime deficit. The 52 points are one off the season high for most second-half points this season for the Falcons. The 83 points are the most the Falcons have scored since a season-opening 87-68 victory over the University of D.C. on Nov. 12, 2010.
Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 points and 12 rebounds, sophomore guard-forward Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) added 12 points and senior forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) had 10 points, 5 assists and three steals for the Falcons, who shot a smoking 59 percent (16 of 27) in the second half.
The Falcons featured a balanced scoring attack with eight players scoring eight or more points. Junior forward Darrell Glass (Washington D.C.) had 9 points while junior guard Jeremy Banks (Elizabeth City, N.C.), redshirt freshman guard-forward Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.), and freshman guard Tyron Laughinghouse (Greenville, N.C.) each tallied eight points. Johnson added nine rebounds for the Falcons, who outrebounded the Golden Bulls 39-31.
CIAA scoring leader Trevin Parks scored 24 points for the Golden Bulls (13-8, 9-4 CIAA, 2-4 Southern Division) but was 6-for-16 from the floor and committed eight turnovers. The trio of Ronald Thornhill, James Otey and Delonta Boyd scored nine points apiece for the Golden Bulls, who shot 35 percent (10 of 29) in the second half.
The Falcons will face the Golden Bulls again in Charlotte, N.C., on Feb. 21. On Monday, the Falcons visit Fayetteville State in a CIAA Southern Division game set for 7:30 p.m. Fayetteville State won the first meeting 77-68 on Feb. 5.
