FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Fayetteville State overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to down Saint Augustine's College 75-64 Monday in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Capel Arena.
Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) scored 13 points, sophomore guard Nick Chamblee (Hampton, Va.) added 12 points and redshirt freshman guard-forward Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) scored 10 points for the Falcons (8-15, 6-8 CIAA, 2-5 Southern Division), who held a 39-30 halftime lead.
The Broncos (12-10, 8-6 CIAA, 4-3 Southern Division) needed only three minutes to tie the score 44-44 after a 14-5 spurt. They took their first lead at 53-52 on Jarrick Jones' basket with 12:24 left and never looked back.
John Herrington scored 14 points on 10 of 15 free throws and Tyrell Tate added 13 and seven rebounds for the Broncos, who outscored the Falcons 45-25 to control the second half. The Broncos shot 50 percent in the second half while the Falcons made 29 percent of their shots and committed 12 turnovers in the half. The Falcons lost despite scoring 26 points off 24 FSU turnovers and outscoring the Broncos 30-16 in the paint. The Falcons finished with 21 turnovers overall.
Junior forward Darrell Glass (Washington, D.C.) added seven points and eight rebounds for the Falcons, who host Livingstone Saturday on Senior Night. It will be the last home game for senior forwards Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) and Terell Burgess (Syracuse, N.Y.). Game time is 4 p.m.
