Falcons Win In OT On Stevenson's Clutch Shot

Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. - Saturday was Senior Day at Saint Augustine's College, but a newcomer saved the day for the Falcons.

Sophomore guard Eric Stevenson (Warrenton, N.C.) scored 20 points on 9-for-12 shooting off the bench including a jumper with 2.7 seconds left to give the Falcons a 58-56 overtime win over Livingstone Saturday at Emery Gymnasium. The win avenged a one-point overtime loss to the Blue Bears on Jan. 31.

Stevenson, a 6-1 guard, scored the game-winning basket on a fadeaway shot in the right corner over the outstretched arms of three defenders. The Blue Bears called timeout to set up a play which was a length-of-the-court pass to a frontcourt player. The ball was caught deep in the paint but knocked out of the hands of the Blue Bear player as time expired.

Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.), named CIAA rookie of the week Monday, added 10 points and 13 rebounds which tied a career-high. He has won the CIAA rookie honor six times this season.

Trone Jackson led Livingstone with 13 points including two free throws with 26 seconds in regulation to send the game into overtime at 54-54. The Blue Bears scored first in the extra period on Darius Cox's jumper but it would be their only points. Kindred tied the score for the Falcons (9-15 overall, 7-8 CIAA, 3-5 Southern Division) on two free throws before Stevenson's clutch shot.

Playing in only his third game, Stevenson led the Falcons with four assists and five steals. He was 2-for-4 behind the three-point arc. Junior forward Darrell Glass (Washington, D.C.) chipped in six points and seven rebounds, and redshirt freshman Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) added six points and six rebounds. All three players helped the Falcons' reserves outscore the Blue Bears 42-26.

In regulation, the Falcons fell behind 52-50 with 1:23 left, but Stevenson made two straight layups for a 54-52 lead with 47 seconds left. Jackson of the Blue Bears then took the game to overtime with his free throws.

Before the game, three Falcons' seniors were honored along with the women's basketball and cheerleading seniors. Forward Terell Burgess (Syracuse, N.Y.) forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.), and forward-center Keith McAllister played their final game at Emery Gym.

The Falcons hit the road next week for their final two regular-season games starting with Johnson C. Smith Monday at 7:30 p.m.
