CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) and senior forward Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) shared scoring honors with 15 points apiece for Saint Augustine's College, but Johnson C. Smith went on a second-half run to pull out a 70-62 victory Monday in a CIAA men's basketball contest at Brayboy Gymnasium.

The Falcons (9-16 overall, 7-9 CIAA, 3-6 Southern Division) almost spoiled Senior Night for the Golden Bulls (15-9, 11-5 CIAA, 4-5 Southern Division). Kindred scored on a layup for a 48-40 Falcons' lead with 10:54 left in the game.

The Golden Bulls then outscored the Falcons 30-14 the rest of the game. Delonta Boyd scored on a layup to give the Golden Bulls their first lead since the contest's early moments at 56-55.

Sophomore guard Nick Chamblee (Hampton, Va.) of the Falcons answered with a jumper, but Ronald Thornhill connected on a three-pointer while falling down for a 59-57 Golden Bulls' lead with 2:41 remaining. The Golden Bulls outscored the Falcons 11-5 in the final 1:33 including 7 of 8 free throws.

Trevin Parks, the CIAA's leading scorer, poured in 15 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Thornhill and Boyd both added 14 points and Antwan Wilkerson added 10 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

The Golden Bulls dominated the glass to climb back in the game. They held a huge rebounding margin (50-35 including 26-12 on the offensive end) to outscore the Falcons 20-4 in second-chance points. Their tenacity on the glass offset 38 percent shooting while the Falcons made 41 percent of their shots. The Golden Bulls also made 22 of 33 free throws compared to 15 of 21 for the Falcons.

The Golden Bulls jumped out to an early lead, but the Falcons quickly gained control which held up until about midway in the second half. Kindred had nine points and Washum added seven points in the first half for the Falcons, who led 29-24 at halftime. Boyd led the Golden Bulls with eight points and Michael Cooper had seven points.
