Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaun Washum (Norfolk, Va.) of Saint Augustine's College saved his best for the last regular-season game of his career.

The senior forward scored a career-high 27 points on 9 of 13 shooting, but the Falcons ended the regular season with an 85-84 loss to crosstown rival Shaw Saturday in a double overtime thriller inside packed Spaulding Gymnasium. The loss snapped a 10-game win streak against the Bears, who beat the Falcons for the first time since 2005.

The Falcons (9-17, 7-10 CIAA, 3-7 Southern Division) finished as the No. 6 seed in the Southern Division. They will face Elizabeth City State Wednesday in the first round of the CIAA Tournament. The Bears (18-8, 11-6 CIAA, 7-3 Southern Division) are the No. 2 seed headed into the tournament.

Washum also collected 10 rebounds and made 8 of 11 free throws, including two free throws with seven seconds left to tie the score at 72 and send the game to a second overtime. Freshman guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.), the CIAA rookie of the year, added 14 points while sophomore guard Nick Chamblee (Hampton, Va.) and junior guard Jeremy Banks (Elizabeth City, N.C.) both added 11 points for the Falcons, who shot 55 percent which is the second highest for the team this season.

Shaw was led by Raheem Smith with 20 points followed by four more players in double figures. Devon McClendon added 17 points including a free throw with four seconds left to give the Bears an 85-81 lead with four seconds left in the second overtime.

Dwight Bell scored 16 points and Tony Smith had 15 points. Darryl Johnson chipped in 10 points for the Bears, who celebrated Senior Night with a victory.

The Falcons, who won the first meeting 68-64 on January 22, pushed the Bears to the limit. The game featured 16 lead changes and 17 ties.

The Bears appeared poised for victory in regulation when McLendon nailed two free throws for a 64-59 lead with 3:47 remaining. The Falcons scored five consecutive points including layups by Washum and junior forward Darryl Glass (Washington, D.C.), and a free throw by Kindred to send the game into overtime tied at 64-64.

The Bears opened a 70-64 lead with 2:35 left in the first overtime, but the Falcons rallied again, going on an 8-2 run capped by Washum's free throws to push the game to a second overtime.

The Bears would lead again in the second overtime, and this time they would hold on. After McLendon's two free throws put the Bears up 80-76 with 1:55 left, Washum scored a jumper and a free throw to pull the Falcons within one at 80-79 with 1:03 left. But the Bears would make four free throws including one by Greg Thomas for an 84-79 lead with 12 seconds left.

Banks' layup cut the margin to three, but McLendon's free throw with four seconds left clinch the game for the Bears. Kindred hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

The Falcons outshot the Bears (43 percent) by getting inside the lane where they enjoyed a 46-34 scoring advantage. But the Bears' depth (35-21 in bench points) and execution (20 assists, 10 turnovers) ultimately was the difference, but not by much.
