RALEIGH, N.C. - On a night when team leading scorer
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) sat out with an injury, his brother
Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) stepped up big for Saint Augustine's College Monday (Jan. 9).
Jon Kindred scored a game-high 17 points including 11 in the first half to help the Falcons open a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 68-54 victory over Virginia State. The victory was the third straight for the Falcons (7-5, 2-0 CIAA), who remained unbeaten at 5-0 in Emery Gymnasium.
Joel Kindred usually paces the Falcons offensively, but
Jon Kindred picked up the scoring load in Joel's absence.
Jon Kindred entered the contest averaging 4.6 points a game.
Making his second start of the season,
Jon Kindred set the tone by scoring eight points as the Falcons opened a 15-7 lead. Kindred's scoring outburst jumpstarted the Falcons, who stretched the lead to double digits and led 43-22 at halftime.
The Trojans (1-13, 0-4 CIAA) outscored the Falcons 32-25 in the second half to keep the final score respectable as Falcon Head Coach Ken Spencer substituted freely. His Falcons were never threatened, though.
Senior guard
Jeremy Banks (Elizabeth City, N.C.) added 15 points including 12 in the first half. Banks and Kindred combined for 23 first-half points for the Falcons. Redshirt sophomore forward
Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) had eight rebounds for the Falcons, who dominated the glass 40-29.
Once they gained a sizable lead, the Falcons relied on defense to keep the Trojans at bay. The Trojans shot 30 percent for the game and turned the ball over 20 times which led to 20 Falcon points.
Kenny Mitchell scored 12 points and DeVonte Williams added 10 points for the Trojans. For the Falcons, junior forward
Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added nine points as 13 Falcons scored including
Jon Kindred, who scored a season-high.
