RALEIGH, N.C. - Saint Augustine's College hung tough, but Bowie State University prevailed late to go home with a 75-71 CIAA men's basketball win Saturday (Jan. 14) at Emery Gymnasium.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs (10-3, 2-2 CIAA), ranked 12th nationally in the NABC Coaches Division II poll. The loss ended a four-game win streak for the Falcons (8-6, 3-1 overall), who nearly rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final 4:44.
Sophomore guard
Chris Rhodes (Greenville, S.C.) swished a double-pump three-point shot while contested to trim the Bulldogs' lead to 69-68 with 41 seconds left. The Bulldogs responded with a jumper by Jay Gavin and a three-point play by Darren Clark for a 74-68 lead with 13 seconds remaining.
Rhodes banged home another three to pull the Falcons within 74-71, but Gavin's free throw with five seconds left provided the final margin.
Junior forward
Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored 12 points and Rhodes added 11 points for the Falcons, who outrebounded the taller Bulldogs 42-37 including 16-5 in offensive rebounds. But the Falcons had trouble shooting over the Bulldogs, who have eight players 6-foot-7 or taller on their roster. The Falcons, who have two players over 6-7 on their roster, shot 32 percent but scored 29 points off 20 Bulldog turnovers.
The Falcons also held a huge edge in depth, outscoring the Bulldogs 40-19. Rhodes, sophomore guard
Tyron Laughinghouse (Greenville, N.C./8 points, 3 blocks, 2 steals), freshman forward
Jordan Jones (Ahoskie, N.C./6 points, 5 rebounds), junior guard
Nick Chamblee (Hampton, Va./6 points, 4 assists, 2 steals) and freshman center
Jonathan Crawley (Richmond, Va./5 points, 6 rebounds) came off the bench to provide valuable minutes for the Falcons.
As for the starters, junior forward
Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) scored nine points and redshirt sophomore forward
Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) added eight points and four rebounds.
Gavin scored 17 points and Clark added 16 points and three steals for the Bulldogs, who shot 50 percent for the game. Bryan Wilson finished with 14 points and Byron Westmoreland scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, who outscored the Falcons 32-16 in the paint.
The Falcons, who played without leading scorer
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) due to injury for the third straight contest, lost their first CIAA game and first home contest of the season. The contest also was the last of four straight home games for the Falcons, who hit the road in the conference for the first time this season Monday (Jan. 16). They visit Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C., at 7:30 p.m.
