Boxscore

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College trailed early, but turned up the defensive heat in the second half of a 66-52 CIAA men's basketball victory Monday (Jan. 16) over Chowan University at the Helms Center on Martin Luther King Day.

The win was the fifth in sixth games for the Falcons (9-6, 4-1 CIAA), who outscored the Hawks 38-16 in the second half to erase a 36-28 halftime deficit. The Falcons' defense limited the Hawks to 5-for-24 shooting for 21 percent in the second half.

Junior forward Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) posted his first career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons, who also flexed their muscles on the boards in the second stanza, outrebounding the Hawks 28-16. For the game, the Falcons controlled the glass 44-31.

Junior forward Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) added 15 points including 4-for-5 three-point shooting and redshirt sophomore forward Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) added 11 points for the Falcons. The Hawks (6-11, 0-5 CIAA) were led by 16 points from Chris Williams.

Williams scored 11 points in the first half as the Hawks shot 56 percent to open an eight-point halftime lead. The Falcons put the clamps on the Hawks in the second half, however. Junior guard David Brown (Richmond, Va.) scored a basket midway in the second half for a 44-43 Falcon lead, their first since early in the first half. The Falcons never trailed again as they opened an eight-point lead on two free throws by Kindred.

Lee Branscome scored for the Hawks to slice the Falcons lead to 52-46 with 7:46 left, but the Hawks would not score another field goal until the 3:10 mark on Chris Williams' layup. Sophomore guard Chris Rhodes (Greenville, S.C.) of the Falcons converted a layup and free throw for a three-point play for a comfortable 64-50 lead with under a minute remaining.

Rhodes added nine points for the Falcons, who shot 40 percent. Sophomore guard Tyron Laughinghouse (Greenville, N.C.) had six points and helped out on the boards with nine rebounds.

The Falcons return home Thursday for a highly anticipated CIAA contest versus Elizabeth City State University at Emery Gymnasium. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
