RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College drilled a season-high 11 three-pointers Saturday, but nationally-ranked Shaw hit the biggest three of the game in a 70-62 victory in the CIAA crosstown rivalry between both men's basketball teams inside packed Spaulding Gymnasium.
Ahead 65-62 late, Malik Allen scored from behind the arc to give the Bears a six-point lead with under a minute remaining. The Bears finished off the game with a dunk by Junius Chaney in the closing seconds.
The dunk capped a hot shooting night for the Bears, who shot 55 percent. Most of their points were in the paint, where they outscored the Falcons 44-10. The Falcons countered with long-range shooting to stay close. They were 11-for-28 behind the three-point arc for 39 percent.
Junior guard
David Brown (Richmond, Va.) led the Falcons (10-7, 5-2 CIAA, 0-1 Southern Division) with 11 points and eight assists. Junior guard
Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added nine points and six rebounds and redshirt sophomore
Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) had eight points and five rebounds. Junior forward
Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with seven points and six rebounds.
Chaney finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Allen added 19 points for the Bears (15-2, 7-0 CIAA, 1-0 Southern Division), ranked 23
rd in the latest NABC Division II Coaches Poll. This was the first CIAA Southern Division meeting for both teams.
The Bears, who are the defending CIAA champions, have seven players 6-foot-6 or taller, while the Falcons have three. Despite the size disadvantage, the Falcons outrebounded the Bears 37-33. The Falcons were behind most of the game, but their outside shooting and rebounding (11 second-chance points) helped them stay in striking distance.
The Falcons almost rallied from a 61-52 deficit with four minutes left. A three-point play and a three-pointer from Brown trimmed the deficit to 63-58. Sophomore guard
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) hit three of four free throws after a flagrant foul on Shaw to close within 63-61 with 2:09 remaining.
The Falcons kept possession because of the flagrant foul, but they missed the shot which could have tied or given them the lead. Chaney converted on the other end on a layup, but freshman center
Jonathan Crawley (Richmond, Va.) hit one of two free throws to pull the Falcons within 65-62.
Allen then canned his big three which gave the Bears a six-point cushion and, ultimately, the win.
The Falcons have nearly a week off before they host Winston-Salem State in another key CIAA Southern Division game next Saturday (Jan. 28). Game time is 4 p.m. at Emery Gymnasium.
The contest will be televised by WAUG-TV on Time Warner Cable (Digital Channel 168). Fans can also follow the game via live stats on
