Falcons Lose To Livingstone On Buzzer-Beater

Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. – Omar Ford-Bey connected on a three-pointer from the corner before the horn sounded to give Livingstone a 64-61 CIAA men's basketball win over Saint Augustine's College Monday (Jan. 30) at Emery Gymnasium.

Ford-Bey finished with 12 points and Nasir Austin scored 15 points for the Blue Bears (5-11, 2-7 CIAA, 1-2 Southern Division), who led by 13 with six minutes remaining. The Falcons (11-8, 6-3 CIAA, 1-2 Southern Division) rallied to take a 59-58 lead on a free throw by Tyron Laughinghouse with 48 seconds left, but the Blue Bears outscored the Falcons 6-2 down the stretch.

Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) had team highs of 15 points and eight rebounds for the Falcons, who entered the contest on a two-game win streak, including an impressive victory over Winston-Salem State this past Saturday. But the Falcons fell behind early to the Blue Bears, who used a deliberate offensive attack to lead most of the game.

The Blue Bears shot 53.8 percent in the first half to lead 37-22 at halftime. The Falcons chipped the margin down to five points in the second half on Johnson's three-pointer, but the Blue Bears expanded the lead to 56-43 before the Falcons made one last run. Keyed by three three-pointers from Kyle Saunders (Hampton, Va.), the Falcons climb back in the game. A steal and dunk by Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) tied the score at 58-58 and Laughinghouse's free throw put the Falcons ahead by one.

The Blue Bears answered with a layup by Ford-Bey and a free throw by Mark Thomas following a Falcons' turnover to regain the lead at 61-59. Laughinghouse was fouled after Thomas missed the second free throw attempt, and he hit two free throws to tie the score with 15 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Trone Jackson drove the lane where he ran into several Falcons' defenders. He found Ford-Bey in the corner, who calmly drained the three-pointer for the victory.

Laughinghouse added nine points and Saunders also scored nine points on 3-for-5 three-point shooting. Saunders was 3-for-3 on three-point attempts in the second half for the Falcons, who only hit 6 of 23 threes for 26 percent. For the contest, the Falcons shot 38 percent while the Blue Bears made 47.7 percent of their shots.

The Falcons are off until Saturday (Feb. 4) when they travel to Fayetteville State for a CIAA Southern Division game starting at 7:30 p.m.
