Boxscore

RALEIGH, N.C. – Saint Augustine's College was cold from the free throw line in a 72-60 loss Monday (Feb. 13) in CIAA men's basketball action at Emery Gymnasium.

With the loss, the Falcons dropped to 13-10 overall, 8-5 in the CIAA and 3-4 in the Southern Division. The win lifted the Broncos to 7-14, 5-8 CIAA and 3-4 in the Southern Division.

Sophomore guard Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) led the Falcons with a game-high 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting including 3-for-5 from the three-point arc. Anthony Shelton scored 18 points for the Broncos while Lenton Donnell and Sidney Evans added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The two teams split the regular-season series this season. The Falcons won 62-59 in Fayetteville, N.C., on Feb. 4.

This time, the Broncos got the better of the Falcons, who made only 11 of 23 free throw attempts for 47.8 percent. By contrast, the Broncos connected on 15 of 21 free throws for 71.4 percent.

The taller Broncos also outrebounded the Falcons and capitalized on their turnovers. Neither team turned the ball over much (Broncos 15, Falcons 14) but the Broncos outscored the Falcons in points off turnovers 23-9. The Broncos also beat the Falcons on the glass 42-32 which led to a 14-9 edge in second chance points.

Their rebounding and defense keyed the Broncos in a game the Falcons controlled early. The Falcons watched a 20-11 lead evaporate as the Broncos finished the first half on a 22-5 run to take an eight-point lead into halftime.

The Falcons rallied in the second half to regain the lead three times – all by one point – before the Broncos went on another run. The Broncos outscored the Falcons 24-11 in the final 10 minutes to pull away.

The Falcons visit Livingstone College Saturday (Feb. 18) in a Southern Division rematch. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C.
