RALEIGH, N.C. – A capacity crowd was on hand to watch Saint Augustine's University in its CIAA home men's basketball opener, but Bowie State University used its height and length to outrun the Falcons 90-72 inside Emery Gymnasium on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.
The Falcons, playing its first home game after seven consecutive road contests, fell to 9-5 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA. The Bulldogs upped their record to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Senior forward
Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led the Falcons with 15 points. Junior guard
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) added 12 points and senior guard
Percy Woods (Washington, D.C.) scored 11 points while redshirt junior forward
Chris Johnson (Hampton, Va.) added nine points and eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs placed six players in double figures led by 18 points from Bryan Westmoreland, the nation's third leading scorer in Division II. Ray Gatling added 16 points and Najee White added 13 points and 16 rebounds before he was ejected with two minutes left after a flagrant foul on senor forward
Jon Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) of the Falcons. Dameatric Scott and Bryan Wilson both had 12 points, respectively.
The Bulldogs did their damage in the paint and in transition. They outrebounded the Falcons 49-34 which helped lead to 40 points in the paint including several dunks and 21 second-chance points. It was the first time a team outrebounded the Falcons this season. The Falcons are ranked 17
th in Division II in rebounding margin, the only CIAA team in the top 20. The Bulldogs also outscored the Falcons 12-2 in fast break points.
The 18-point loss was the largest for the Falcons this season while the 90 points were a season-high for an opponent. St. Aug Head Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr. was disappointed his team didn't show more fire against the Bulldogs at home after spending much of the season on the road.
“We didn't play well on both ends of the floor,” Blow said. “We just have to regroup and get ready for Saturday.”
The Bulldogs led the entire game. Their lead was 43-32 at halftime and it hovered around double-digits for much of the second half. Every time the Falcons would get within a few possessions of making it real interesting, the Bulldogs would answer with a momentum-stopping bucket or dunk. The closest the Falcons would get down the stretch is 68-61 on Stroman's jumper at the 7:15 mark. The Bulldogs would eventually pull away at the end.
The Falcons will attempt to turn things around on Saturday against Lincoln (Pa.) University. Game time is 4 p.m.
WAUG-TV will televise the game locally on Time Warner Cable 168. Fans can follow the game on live stats on
