The doubleheader opens the CIAA season for the Falcons and Lady Falcons. It is the first of three consecutive away games for both teams. They return home Jan. 10 against the Bowie State University men's and women's teams at Emery Gymnasium on campus.
The St. Aug men's team boasts a 7-3 overall record including four victories in their last five games. The Falcons are currently riding a two-game win streak including a 66-63 victory over the University of West Georgia in their last game on Dec. 18, 2012. Virginia State is 5-4 overall.
The Falcons are sparked by the backcourt tandem of
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) and
Percy Woods (Washington, D.C.). Kindred, a junior guard, averages a team-high 15.5 points a game. He led the Falcons in scoring the past two seasons. Woods, a senior transfer guard, is scoring at 14.6 points a clip. He is swishing 60 percent of his three-point attempts which leads the conference and ranks among the nation's best. Senior forward
Tyquan Stroman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) chips in 10.4 points per contest.
The Falcons are getting the job done on the defensive end as well. Opponents are only making 38.5 percent of their shots, and the Falcons rank 21
st in Division II in rebounding margin (8.8).
The Lady Falcons, who last played Dec. 14, 2012, enter the contest against Virginia State at 4-5 overall, but one of their losses was to Division I Winthrop University. They rank 14
th in Division II in steals per game (14.3).
The Lady Falcons feature a young and talented group of players. Two of their top three scorers are freshmen including
Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, Va.), who leads the team with an 11.8 average. Senior transfer
Temperance Jacobs (McDonough, Ga.) scores at 11.4 points a clip and adds 7.3 rebounds a game. Freshman
Regime McCombs (Greenville, S.C.) averages 10.9 a game while freshman
Terri Jacobs (McDonough, Ga.), Temperance's sister, averages 6.9 rebounds. McCombs is fourth in the CIAA in three-point shooting percentage (40.3 percent).
Virginia State is a formidable foe for the Lady Falcons. The Lady Trojans, who are perennial CIAA contenders, are 7-3 overall.
