The Saint Augustine's University men's and women's basketball teams are aiming to start new win streaks against Virginia Union University in a CIAA doubleheader at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va., on Monday, January 13, 2014. The game times are 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 for the men.
The Falcons had an eight-game men's streak snapped in a 69-48 loss to Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday. The Lady Falcons' six-game streak came to an end against Lincoln (Pa.) 56-50 on the same day. The losses were the first for both teams since November 2013, and the win streaks were the longest since the 2009-10 season.
The Falcons, who average 82.4 points, were held to season lows in points (48), field goals made (17) and field goal attempts (42) in the loss to Lincoln. They committed a season-high in turnovers (28) which led to 34 points for Lincoln. One positive for the Falcons (3-1 CIAA, 10-4 overall) was their defense. They held an opponent to under 70 points for the third consecutive game. Junior guard
Amere May (South Hall, MI) and junior forward
Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, SC) each scored 11 points for the Falcons against Lincoln. May is the CIAA scoring leader with a 20.9 average.
The Lady Falcons (3-1 CIAA, 8-5 overall) led much of their game against Lincoln but failed to score a field goal in the final nine minutes. Sophomore guard
Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) had the hot hand for the Lady Falcons, connecting on 7 of 11 field goals including 6 of 10 three-pointers for 20 points. A bright spot for the Lady Falcons was their defense. They forced 20 or more turnovers for the third consecutive game. Lincoln (Pa.) had 24 turnovers.
The losses could be blamed on fatigue for both teams, who were playing their second game on the road in three days. The doubleheader against Virginia Union will be their third away game in five days.
The Virginia Union men (2-4 CIAA, 3-12 overall) have lost five of their last six games including a 94-77 defeat to Fayetteville State University at home on Saturday. But the Panthers lead the CIAA Northern Division by virtue of a 1-0 division record. They defeated Virginia State earlier this season in the only league divisional game so far. Ray Anderson leads the Panthers with a 16.7 scoring average.
The Lady Panthers (1-4 CIAA, 4-9 overall) defeated Fayetteville State 68-63 at home to break a four-game losing skid. They are led by CIAA scoring leader Ashle Freeman, who averages 20.5 points.
