Raheem Jolliffe (Fayetteville, NC) added a career-high 20 points, but Saint Augustine's University fell 84-80 to Johnson C. Smith University in a back-and-forth CIAA men's basketball game between Southern Division rivals at Brayboy Gymnasium on Saturday, January 22, 2014.
Both May and Jolliffe combined to make 9 of 15 three-pointers for the Falcons (0-2 Southern Division, 3-4 CIAA, 10-7 overall). Jolliffe knocked down 6 of 10 threes and May hit 3 of 5 treys. The backcourt duo also combined to make 15 of 27 field goal attempts from the floor. May was 9 of 16 and Jolliffe was 6 of 11.
Jolliffe hit his sixth three-pointer to trim the Falcons' deficit to 82-80 with 4.2 seconds left. LaMarquis Letchaw of the Golden Bulls made two free throws for the final margin with three seconds left.
The Falcons trailed 73-66 with 3:40 remaining but May scored nine straight points to pull the visitors within 78-75 with 1:15 left. May scored 15 of the Falcons' last 21 points.
Senior guard
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) added 11 points for the Falcons, who shot 49 percent for the floor and 59 percent from the three-point line (10 of 17). Senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA) had eight points and nine rebounds and junior forward
Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, SC) added seven points and five rebounds.
Emilio Parks finished 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead four double-figure scorers for the Golden Bulls (1-1 Southern Division, 4-4 CIAA, 12-6 overall), who shot 50 percent. Robert Williams added 18 points, Letchaw had 16 and Antwan Wilkerson scored 10 points. The Golden Bulls connected on 6-of-6 free throws in the final 36 seconds to hold off the Falcons.
The contest featured 14 ties and 12 lead changes. The Falcons held their last lead at 59-57 on two Kindred free throws with 9:25 left. Neither team led by more than six points until the Golden Bulls took a 69-61 lead with 4:58 remaining.
Jolliffe scored 12 first-half points on 4-of-5 three point shooting. His first three put the Falcons up 7-5 early. Jolliffe banged in another three for a 22-18 Falcons lead. The first half was back-and-forth between both teams with the Golden Bulls leading by a slim margin, 39-38, at halftime. The Falcons cut the lead to one on a nasty two-handed dunk by Stockdale as time expired.
Both teams were hot in the first half, which featured plenty of transition plays. The Falcons shot 52 percent and the Golden Bulls made 56 percent of their shots. The Golden Bulls gained a slight first-half edge by making seven of 11 free throw attempts compared to 3 of 4 for the Falcons.
May added eight points and three assists and Kindred scored six points for the Falcons, who were five of eight from three-point range, mainly thanks to Jolliffe. Williams scored 10 points and Letchaw added five for the Golden Bulls.
After a two-week five-game road stretch, the Falcons finally return home to Emery Gymnasium on Saturday, January 25. They will host crosstown rival Shaw University in a highly anticipated contest at 4 p.m.
