RALEIGH, N.C. – After five consecutive road games, the Saint Augustine's University men's and women's basketball teams return home to Emery Gymnasium on campus to host crosstown rival Shaw University in two key CIAA contests on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. for the women and 4 p.m. for the men.
Tickets are $12 for general admission. The cost is $8 for children ages 6 to 12, visiting students with valid ID, faculty and staff, and military personnel. St. Aug students with valid ID get in free as well as children ages 5 and under. Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
WAUG-TV will televise the basketball doubleheader on Time Warner Cable 168 in Raleigh, N.C. WAUG is a television and radio station owned and operated by Saint Augustine's University.
The Falcons (0-2 Southern Division, 3-4 CIAA, 10-7 overall) and the Bears (0-2 Southern Division, 4-4 CIAA, 6-12 overall) are seeking their first divisional men's victories, and both teams are looking to end four-game losing streaks. The Falcons had won eight consecutive games before their losing skid began.
The Falcons are led by senior guard
Amere May (South Haven, MI), junior guard-forward
Joel Kindred (Raleigh, NC) and senior center Jon Crawley (Richmond, VA). May and Kindred average 19.9 and 14.9 points, respectively. The 6-foot-9, 300-plus pound Crawley averages 12.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks. He leads the CIAA in field-goal percentage (61.5) and blocks. The Falcons average 80.7 points and a league-high 42.4 rebounds.
The Bears are paced by senior guards Curtis Hines, Andre Paulk and Derrick Hunter. Hines averages 20.2 points to lead the CIAA in scoring. Paulk averages 12.5 points and Hunter averages 10.2 points for the Bears, who shoot 48.3 percent from the floor. Freshman guard Larry Richardson averages 10.1 points. The Falcons are 5-3 in the last eight meetings between both teams at Emery Gymnasium since the 2000-01 season, but Shaw has won the last two contests.
The Lady Falcons (1-1 Southern Division, 5-2 CIAA, 10-6 overall) are looking to knock off the perennially powerful Lady Bears (2-0 Southern Division, 6-2 CIAA, 12-6 overall) at home for the first time since 2010 and hand them their first division loss. The Lady Falcons took care of business on the road, posting a 3-2 record in five away games during a two-week period. They are even better at home inside Emery Gymnasium, where the Lady Falcons are 3-0 this season.
The Lady Falcons are sparked by sophomore guards
Regime McCombs (Greenville, SC) and
Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, VA) and sophomore center
Terri Jacobs (McDonough, GA). McCombs is a prolific three-point shooter who averages a team-high 12.7 points and ranks second in the CIAA in three-point field goal percentage (37.6). Jacobs is the Lady Falcons' leader in rebounds (8.8) and blocks (1.1) while Walton heads the Lady Falcons in assists (3.5) and steals (2.1). Both Jacobs and Walton average 9.8 points for the Lady Falcons, who force opponents to commit 24.3 turnovers.
The Lady Bears have five players who score in double figures. The inside tandem of senior forward Ariel Hatcher and Verdine Warner, a 6-foot-4 junior center, average 13.7 and 13.4 points, respectively. Sophomore point guard Kaula Jack average 11.7 points, freshman guard Micah Brooks average 11 points and senior point guard Diamond Mitchell average 10.1 points. Warner averages 10.2 rebounds and Mitchell averages 3.8 assists for the Lady Bears, who average a league-high 76.9 points.
